Today brings news of something gamers often crave, creativity, Xbox has announced earlier this morning that starting May 18th at 11:00 PST one million Gamertags will begin to be released. Gamertags for those of us who are unaware, are the usernames players have for their Xbox Live accounts. They are their online name, their own twist on identity.
Those with Xbox Gold and 1 year of activity will be getting their pick of the litter first. The Gamertags will be liberated over a 24-hour period to give everyone in different countries a fair shot at their witty pop culture reference.
These Gamertags are from the original Xbox era, the same source of Gamertags we used in our 2011 release. – Will Tuttle Xbox Wire Editor in Chief
While not exactly “current” it will be very interesting to see what creative and forgotten references people all around the world use to gain a laugh every time they score, get a kill, or message someone.
Changing your Gamertag will not affect any of your previously recorded stats whether that be achievements and gamerscore, friends, or even game titles you own. Rest assured that your gaming experience will be the same with the exception of a completely new (and awesome) identity.
According to Xbox Wire the easiest way to change will be through the use of Xbox.com however changes can also be made through the use of Xbox 360, Xbox One, The Xbox app, and of course Windows 10. Xbox has made it very easy to transition to a new tag and Xbox Gold users should take full advantage of this opportunity if their Gamertag is subpar.
The feeding frenzy for those shiny Gamertags starts May 18th at 11:00 PST.
Happy Pickings.
