Is Subscribe My Adventure A Satire For Our Possible Obsession With Social Media?

Subscribe My Adventure is a new project being developed by Gamtropy, a small indie game studio based in Taiwan. The team was founded in 2017, and have since released Desertopia and Piggy Detected!. The studio values relatability and relevance. On their BitSummit page, they state, “We seek unique, innovative materials from everyday life to put in our games, and we focus on making games that reflect pop culture and social issues, hoping our games will resonate with players as they go about their daily grind.” With their newest project, Subscribe My Adventure, the team seeks inspiration from the constant maintenance, and possibly obsession, towards upkeeping social media.

The game is an RPG (role-playing game) that takes place in a fantasy world. The previous king has passed, and there is no heir to inherit the throne. What’s a desperate kingdom to do? It is decided that the most popular “Hero of the Land” shall be crowned the new ruler. You will be tasked with maintaining their posts, streaming their battles and adventures, and gather followings to prove they indeed the most popular “Hero of the Land”. Players will have the freedom to create their adventure story through the use of hashtags, battles, posts, and live streams. The team from Marners’ Rock posted their experience playing the demo available during Pax East 2019.

Depending on how the player completes their adventure, they will receive experience; experience determines how much the player can level their skills. The skills can determine the player’s attack, defense, experience earned, or social media influence.

The studio has also been accepted to showcase Subscribe My Adventure at this year’s BitSummit 7 Spirits, occurring later this June. This will be Gamtropy’s second showcase with the event, as the team presented last year with Desertopia. BitSummit, one of Japan’s top indie gaming festivals, is back for its seventh year. The event which started in late 2012, has grown from “a small, industry-only event for around 200 people in 2013, to a groundbreaking festival that held court to over 11,000 people in 2018”. The event will feature “over 100 games from 24 countries, industry-leading speakers, and amazing musicians – all in the heart of Kyoto, Japan.” The game lineup for this the showcase has also been announced. Some of these many titles include Lost Ember (Mooneye Studios), Last Labyrinth (Amata K.K), Spice and Wolf VR (Gemdrops, Inc.), and Tales of the Neon Sea (Zodiac Interactive). For more information on the BitSummit 7 Spirits 2019 event, or the large selection of games to be included in the event, be sure to check out the event’s website here.

The project is still quite early in development, but perhaps more details will be revealed soon. Gamtropy is estimating the launch for Subscribe My Adventure to occur this upcoming October. The game will be playable on Android and iOS devices. Want to follow the game’s development progress? Check out the studio’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

I have recently discovered that I DO NOT want to be a doctor, and have been studying Creative Writing and World Cinema. I love storytelling more than any subject, and would probably watch, read, or play anything given to me just to know how it ends.
