IndieCade 2019: RPG Time: The Legend of Wright Hands-On Impressions

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is a very charming and unique game that oozes with personality and style. The game is about a hopeful youth who wants to be a game developer so he made his own, handmade RPG that he plays after school. Essentially, you play his game which is the story of Wright and his quest to save the princess from a dragon. I got the chance to go hands-on with the game at IndieCade 2019. Here’s what I thought of the game.

What immediately draws your attention to the game is the art style. For one, you start the game by opening the youth’s notebook and the story unfolds out in this beautiful 2d hand-drawn animation. You also get handmade tools that act as the hud. For instance, your HP is displayed through the use of measuring tape. The music is played through a music player, the d-pad is made out of cardboard and equipment is presented to you with what looks to be stickers. What I got to play was the beginning and first level of the game. You start out in a cave and have to fight your way out. As you move through the level you’ll come across obstacles in the form of taking away part of the level by erasing it away but another avenue is created. Then, you have to maneuver over to a cool or cute ladder that you get to choose. I chose the cool ladder which meant that I was climbing over a dragon. Then, you get to pick a helmet which will help you traverse over a landslide. Depending on what you choose affects the defense of the helmet. Certain things were better than others.

The demo ended with turn-based combat. What surprised me about the combat was how unique it is. Sure, there’s the basic attack command but the enemy was a flame that was resistant to simple attacks. You have to find it’s weakness before finishing it off. Now, that probably sounds like just any other turn-based fighting system but the way you attack and figure out the puzzle happens in a way that you can only see this game doing. Overall, I came away very excited to see how the game changes and evolves throughout the story. RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is expected to launch sometime in 2020 for PC, Android, iOS, and Xbox One.
