I got the chance to go hands-on with some games at IndieCade 2019: a games festival dedicated to independent games. One of the games I was able to go hands-on with was Lineweight from Cipher Prime. Previous Cipher Prime games were more mechanics driven and focused on gameplay to a certain extent. Lineweight is more of a narrative experience that is meant to let players interact with the five stories that they’re telling.
Cipher Games says that every chapter is brimming with emotion and focused on illuminating their signature style of color, light, and music. It reminded me a lot of Sayonara: Wild Hearts which has been described as a pop album you can play. Instead, Linewight has stories you get to experience in a way that makes me wish every book could do something like this. Every story is unique and filled with cool, little touches that give life to the words that appear on the screen. As you progress through a story, the colors, mood, and atmosphere change depending on what words are on the screen. Every moment, word, and image is controlled by your finger, marrying storytelling and design in a unique union that is best experienced than being told what it is.
As of now, Lineweight will release sometime by the end of 2019 for iOS. For more info on games from IndieCade 2019, check out our impressions of Neo Cab, Voronoi Voyager, Bloodroots, and Skate & Date.
