Indie Game ‘Crawl’ Adds Gabe Newell Boss

Poor Gabe Newell. Between being threatened with death by game developers and having his face sprayed all over Tokyo-to, the leader of Valve can’t seem to avoid getting mixed up in bizarre ways within the games his company’s digital distribution platform, Steam, hosts. At the latest, he’s being featured as a formidable boss in the indie dungeon crawler, Crawl.

Crawl, released last August under the Steam Early Access banner, is a charming roguelike actioner with a unique twist: its multiplayer option features one player taking on the role of the hero while the other three players take on the role of his or her monstrous opponents. Should the hero be slain, the player that did the deed takes over as the hero, and the slain player joins the ranks of the monsters. It’s gotten a rare “Overwhelmingly Positive” reception on Steam from 654 reviews, even in its Early Access phase.

In an update on the blog of developer Powerhoof, hidden boss character soon to be added to the game has been revealed: Gabe Newell. This is evidenced by a tantalizing gif posted on the blog.

Looking like a disgruntled Peter Griffin, the seemingly benign Newell marches around the room before performing a Shoryuken on the player and then going insane, sprouting daggers in each hand and pounding him into submission. It’s hard to tear your eyes off of it.

There’s no word on when exactly this hidden boss will be making his way to Crawl, but it’s going to happen at some point.
