Indie Developer Pop Sandbox Working on LOUD on Planet X

For a while, the music game genre had been dead and buried after both the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises ceased churning out games. This slowly seems to be changing with the recent announcement of Rock Band 4, and now, LOUD on Planet X, a funky looking rhythm game by Canadian indie developer Pop Sandbox.

LOUD’s gameplay concept revolve around an interesting combination of tower defense games like Plants vs Zombies and the the afore-mentioned music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Players choose one of twelve real-life Canadian bands to play as, such as Tegan and Sara, Metz, Austra, July Talk and Fucked Up. After playing a successful tutorial gig, the band will suddenly find itself transported to an alien planet, and must fend off the hostile extraterrestrials using a combination of music, strobe lights, fog machines, bouncers and speakers.

LOUD is being developed for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and both iOS and Android platforms. A Kickstarter campaign to raise funds will begin this April, and will be showcased at SXSW this month.

Developer Pop Sandbox is also known for their previous game, Pipe Trouble, which was featured at Cannes and caused some controversy over its politically conscious gameplay, in which players must build oil pipelines while avoiding oil spills, sabotage and the ire of environmentalists.
