In Space We Brawl is a unique beat ’em up/twin stick shooter hybrid coming exclusively to the PS3 and PS4.
“Space ships” and “brawler” are two concepts you don’t often see mashed together, even in the world of indie games, yet those are the two elements that form the basis of Forge Reply’s upcoming experimental title In Space We Brawl, coming exclusively to the PS3 and PS4.
Forge Reply has been around in the gaming industry in a fringe capacity for some time now. The company has a lot of history developing mobile-based games for everything from iOS to the Symbian operating system, but In Space We Brawl is their first major push into the home console market. Rather than sticking to one of the standards that indie studios usually rely on, the company has chosen instead to try for a completely new take on the beat ’em up genre, with a focus on local multiplayer.
In Space We Brawl features a local multiplayer setting with the gameplay mechanics of a fast paced space shooter. Players can select a ship and a weapon choosing among 100+ different combinations, looking for the best mix for their combat style. When battling in one of the eight different locations, they will also face environmental space hazards such as solar winds, black holes and alien nests that they must carefully navigate or use to their advantage when fighting against other players.
The game also has a ridiculously bad (yet entertaining) trailer available:
With the rise in popularity of online play, local multiplayer lost a lot of focus for many developers as they instead began to build experiences oriented toward users playing across the internet. In recent years, however, local multiplayer has seen something of a boom, especially in the indie market. In Space We Brawl still manages to set itself apart even within that limited niche, however, with its unique take on both brawler and twin-stick shooter concepts, and, honestly, looks like it will be a blast to play.
Forge Reply has not announced any hard release date for In Space We Brawl yet, though they do promise that its release will be “soon.”
