Ike and NFC in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS

Ike, from the Fire Emblem series, is now part of the roster for the new Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.

Masahiro Sakurai, the Super Smash Bros. director, posted pictures on Miiverse showing of the character’s redesign and explaining a few things about the character.

“For this game, Ike’s design is based on the hero that appears in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn,” says a post from Sakurai. “His sword deals heavy damage in Smash Bros., so this design suits him very well!”

Ike had a first appearance in the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game and appeared in multiple Fire Emblem games as a main character and protagonist.

The Super Smash Bros. website now includes Ike along with other recurring Nintendo characters. Now, the total announced characters sits at 30. Ike is among the roster of new and old Nintendo characters, ranging from Mega Man to Nintendo’s mascot Mario.

Yesterday it was also reported that the game is going to use Nintendo Figure Technology (NFC) for the upcoming game. NFC is used in games like Skylanders and Nintendo said earlier this month it will be creating these figurine characters for the system.

The news come from a French website called Le Figaro. In an interview, General Director of Nintendo France, Stephan Bole makes comments that translate into saying Nintendo will use NFC technology for the Smash Bros. title. No further details on his comment were made by him or the company.

Also, earlier in the week, Sakurai announced that characters in the game will also be mirrored exactly the same when either facing left or right when fighting.

“The leg and arm positions of some characters will automatically be mirrored when facing left or right.” said Sakurai in another Miiverse post. “Mario, for example, will have his chest shown in the foreground regardless of whether he’s facing right or left. This was quite a tedious task, but thanks to it we can show the best features of each character even better.”

As E3 is closer, there is sure to be more information about the game and other clarifications to be made. There will be no press conference this from Nintendo and they will hold a Smash Bros. Tournament at E3 on June 13 at 4 p.m. Nintendo has announced that the 3DS version of the game is set for a Summer 2014 release date, while the Wii U version is coming in Fall 2014.
