The third day of IGN’s Summer Game Fest was full of announcements and news that fans of anime games may find exciting. The developer Vanillaware announced that the Japanese-exclusive 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim would be receiving an official western release on September 8th of this year. A western release for the title has been long-awaited by fans of the game’s director, George Kamitani, ever since the game’s Japanese release in November of last year. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was received well after its initial launch in Japan, landing a 9.5 rating in a game review from IGN Japan, and receiving a number of awards including the Future Division Winner at Japan’s Game Awards in 2019. The latest trailer for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim showcases Vanillaware’s signature painterly art-style in the 2-dimensional anime-styled world, and introduces each of the 13 different protagonists that will have their fates intertwined.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim follows the story of 13 different Japanese high-school students in 1985, as they defend Japan from the invading giant and monstrous colossi named Kaiju. Each of the 13 protagonists will have their own unique stories as they discover more about the mysterious Kaiju, and will pilot their own giant mechs called Sentinels to defend Japan. The sci-fi adventure game will be releasing on Playstation 4 consoles on September 8th by the publisher Atlus, and pre-orders of the physical edition will include an exclusive limited-availability art book. Upon the game’s release, only Japanese audio will be available, but Atlus has announced that they will be releasing a patch that will include an English-VO option for the game soon after the game’s launch.
More anime titles also received more news and announcements, including a new character reveal trailer for Ramlethal from the anime fighting game Guilty Gear Strive developed by Arc Systems Works. The reveal trailer showcased the redesign for the returning sword-wielding, sharp-toothed Ramlethal Valentine, as she combos and beats down on familiar faces from the Guilty Gear Strive beta. The announcement of Ramlethal follows the latest character announcement trailer showcasing the new version of the returning fighter Faust. Another anime game announcement was made during day 3 of the expo, as Sega announced the upcoming release of DLC for their online MMO Phantasy Star Online 2 that released on PC and consoles in the West earlier this year. The official reveal trailer announced that the update will include episode 4 of the game’s story and will be coming to the West in August of this year.
Day 3 of the games fest also offered an exclusive gameplay preview for the new perilous-platformer title Blue Fire developed by Graffiti Games and Robi Studios. Set in the desolate world of Penumbra and following the pint-sized protagonist Umbra, Blue Fire is a 3-D exploration and platformer game that is reminiscent of Hollow Knight. Players will be able to explore the dark world with unique 3-dimensional parkour movement and unlock special upgrades and abilities that will help players progress through the game. Blue Fire is set to release in early 2021 on the Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Store page offers more information and screenshots for the title. IGN’s Summer of Gaming will continue with Day 4 tomorrow starting at 9 P.M. PST, and a schedule of events can be found here.
