Hotel Barcelona is opening its doors this September, and it’s not the kind of place you check out of. From the minds of SUDA51 and SWERY, two creators who’ve built careers on being unapologetically weird, the 2.5D co-op slasher launches physically for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on September 26, with pre-orders now live at major retailers for $29.99, according to a press release.
The game throws players into a warped grindhouse fever dream where each hotel floor is home to a serial killer pulled straight from VHS nightmares. It starts when rookie U.S. Marshal Justine crash-lands near the property, only to get swept into a waking horror show that forces her to share headspace with Dr. Carnival, a grotesque ancient being who unlocks powers that are as brutal as they are unhinged.
Gameplay-wise, Hotel Barcelona is a bloody side-scroller that mixes hack-and-slash action with rogue-lite mechanics and a twist of surreal personality-splitting. Each time you die, your previous self doesn’t just vanish; it becomes a spectral ally, adding layers of strategy (and revenge) to repeat runs. Boss fights are loud, weird, and unapologetically chaotic, and the whole thing pulses with the off-kilter style you’d expect from creators of No More Heroes and Deadly Premonition.
It’s not a solo trip, either. Up to four players can slash their way through the nightmare in online co-op, ramping up the carnage across grotesque hotel floors and taking on surreal serial killers in a tag-team bloodbath. Whether you’re going in alone or bringing backup, the game doesn’t let up, and with every floor themed around a different fear, you’re always one wrong step from getting gutted.
Hotel Barcelona marks the first full collaboration between SUDA51 and SWERY, and it shows. The game is soaked in the kind of irreverent storytelling, meta-commentary, and psychological grime both are known for. There’s humor, horror, and a distinct sense that reality is always just a bit off. It’s stylish, brutal, and genuinely bizarre; in other words, exactly what fans were hoping for.
Pre-orders are available now, and if this is your kind of twisted vacation, you might want to book a room early. Once you check into Hotel Barcelona, there’s no guarantee you’re making it out.
