Groundhog Day is a hilarious movie from the early 90s directed by the late Harold Ramis and stars comedy legend Bill Murray. If you haven’t seen it, you should, it’s amazing. But if you haven’t, it’s the story of a man named Phil Connors, who relives Groundhog Day over and over and over again. If you’ve seen it, you’ve inevitably wondered how you would go about living the same day on a loop. Fortunately, a sequel is being released on September 17, and strangely enough, we won’t have to wonder anymore since the story will be told in VR.
Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is a canonical sequel to the original movie, where players can experience the madness of a single day on repeat. In true déjà vu fashion, players will assume the role of Phil Connor’s son, Phil Connors Jr., who has returned to his hometown of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to record his vlog on the day before Groundhog Day. Much like his father, Phil Jr. gets trapped in a time loop, reliving the same day over and over again, desperately searching for a way out. It’s ironic that his father wanted to escape Groundhog Day, while Phil Jr. wants nothing more than to wake up on February 2. According to the website, “Players will solve puzzles and explore the world introduced by the film as they try to break out of this time loop.”
The game was developed by Tequila Works, the studio known for Deadlight, The Sexy Brutale, and Rime. It is being produced jointly by MWMi and Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, as the original movie was made by Colombia Pictures, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son will be released on September 17 for Sony PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. You can check out the website for more information, or follow Phil Connors Jr. on Twitter.
