After announcing his retirement from his studio PlatinumGames a few weeks ago, Hideki Kamiya has officially left as of today. With his newfound free time, his first course of action was to launch a YouTube channel simply titled “Hideki Kamiya Channel.”
PlatinumGames was founded on October 1, 2007 by Kamiya, Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba and Tatsuya Minami after their companies, Odd Inc. and Seed Inc., merged. At PlatinumGames, Kamiya is best known for his efforts on the Bayonetta series from being the director for its initial installment in 2009 to holding the role of supervising director on 2022’s Bayonetta 3. Kamiya’s work goes beyond PlatinumGames, as his career in the video game industry started with Capcom in 1996 as the system planner for Resident Evil. He is also one to thank for Resident Evil 2, now known as one of the most iconic survival horror games, serving as its director.
Now that Kamiya has left the studio, his first order of business was uploading to his YouTube a video with some updates regarding his life and career. With a box of collectibles on a table, he proudly proclaims himself the former Executive Vice President of PlatinumGames and is now unemployed, asking for subscribers.
Although Kamiya is unable to say why he truly left PlatinumGames, exclaiming “There’s no way I can put it!” He reassures his fans he is not leaving the video game industry just yet, stating “I left the company because I wanted to follow my beliefs as a game creator and to choose the path I think is right and move on. Yeah, so I’m not going to retire yet. I want to keep creating games.” Unfortunately, due to unspoken “reasons,” Kamiya cannot join a video game company for another year, asking for his fans to wait.
Kamiya chats about his life post-PlatinumGames, what plans he has for his YouTube channel and requests ideas from commenters for a while. He closes the video by driving a red Lamborghini toward the camera as cheerful music plays, saying: “Off to the unemployment center! See ya!”
Notably, the video did not mention any news about Kamiya’s game with the company that was in development at the time of his departure: Project GG. Kamiya was set to direct it, but in a response to a fan questioning about its status on Twitter/X, Kamiya replied “Ask Platinum about Platinum…”
