Halo Fan Game Tries To “Recapture” Series

As time goes on, people who enjoy a certain franchise will create a “fan game” that isn’t an official game, but are made as either a tribute to the game, or a figurative “screw you” to the game. Pokémon is well known for having fan games, but another popular series has a fan game: Halo. Halo, which is one of the top Xbox exclusive games in gaming history, has a fan game created by 30 different Halo fans called Installment 01. The creators of the fan game released a game play video for the game.

According to Gamespot, the game’s goal to go back to the original roots of the series.

Our goal is to bring a unique Halo multiplayer experience to Windows, Mac, and Linux,” the video description states. “We hope to combine the best elements from each Halo game, but will be focusing on the more classic gameplay style.”

What’s good about the creation of Installment 01 is that it’s supposedly done legally and will be free to all Halo fans. Certain Microsoft games allow fans to create their own individual works that are based game’s contents, as long as fans do not profit off the games and that they do not use soundtracks or sound effects, which is why the creators say that they created the game from scratch.

Some fan games have had a less than favorable response from video game companies. Recently, creators of Pokémon Uranium were asked to shut down the game by Nintendo and another game that had a similar response was Project AM2R, which was a Metroid II recreation.

The netcode lead of Installment 01 Aiden Leeming told Rock, Paper, Shotgun that he believes that he and his fellow creators have followed the rules laid down by Microsoft and hopes to have contact with Microsoft soon.

Well, we’re fairly sure that we’re covered by them [the rules] as we’re sticking well within them… we’re creating all of our own assets and not making a single penny off the game. However we’re currently trying to get some sort of contact with Microsoft to talk about how we can make sure we don’t get shut down.

The game has yet to be released, but you can track the game itself on its website. It will only be available for PC.

Bryan Ingram: My name is Bryan. I just graduated from High Point University with a degree in Journalism. I'm 25 and writing has always been a part of my life. I'm a big Pokémon fan, so I'l spend a lot of my time playing that. Other than that, I love sports, particularly the Charlotte Hornets and the Carolina Panthers. No matter how bad the team is, I will always rep them.
