It was in 2014, roughly 10 years after Half-Life 2 debuted, that a modder by the name of Gunship_Mark_II released information on the large-scale mod they had been working on. At the time of the first article they wrote, they stated that they had torn down and redone this mod, known as MMod, at least 4 times over. It was never clear how long Gunship_Mark_II had worked on the MMod when they released the first gameplay clip in the article.
But as time went on, Gunship_Mark_II continued the work, going through several more extensions and changes, along with much more. Then, finally, another 5 years later, MMod was finally complete:
The changes to Half-Life 2 are extensive with its gun-play and combat. This new mod adds new weapons, new animations, and plenty more. For the visuals, it doesn’t just add new animations for how the guns shoot or reload, but also shows off the idle animations of the main character, Gordon Freeman, and his guns; this includes checking ammo, cleaning off any smudges on the scope of his crossbow, and even stroking the beloved rocket launcher.
Now, for new weapons, there are some guns that are new, but the most noteworthy addition is being able to use the turret to the players’ advantage, as they are able to pick it up and carry it around until it runs out of bullet. Another new feature for guns is being able to see down the sight lines of certain smaller ones, such as the pistol or revolver. On top of having new weapons, the sounds and visual effects are now more accommodating and better fit the new style and look of MMod.
With added AI difficulty, it wasn’t just Gordon Freeman and his combat that were changed. The Combine AI have also been shifted, so they’re harder to kill and harder to fight against, making for a great challenge.
With plenty of praise to give it enough recognition over on the announcement page, Gunship_Mark_II’s MMod has won over the hearts of many. After 9 years in the making, their hard work has finally paid off. MMod for Half-Life 2 is currently up for download here, so long as players have a copy of the game along with Episode 1 and Episode 2.
