The first expansion to the famous card game from the highly acclaimed Witcher RPG franchise, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, is on its way. The strategic digital version of the game has made its way to its own platform over the past year and has even accumulated an esports following with the March Qualifier beginning today and the Season of the Bear well underway. The first major card expansion to Gwent has been revealed as the Crimson Curse and will bring creatures and spells to the game that originate from dark rituals and corruption.
CD Projekt RED describes the introduction of the cards from Crimson Curse as those that will bring in “a time of madness and despair.” A Blood Moon has risen after a ceremony was performed by a powerful vampire, which has brought new monsters into the Gwent lore. Players following the story can choose to fight the vampire, Dettlaff, and his demons or join his evil cause.
Crimson Curse is bringing over 100 new cards to Gwent that will consist of 31 neutral cards and 14 for each separate faction that will have unique archetypes. Just some of the types of allies that each faction will have to adapt to include the Dryads of Brokilon, Cintrian mages, Toussaint knights, Svalblod cultists, and blood-sucking vampires. Only five cards have officially been described and revealed so far. Wildhalm of Attre fortifies allies with its Shield ability to block first instances of damage from opponents. The Dryad Ranger inflicts Poison onto her enemies over time and also has the Harmony ability that will award a boost from the new Scoia’tael race. The Plumard card Bleeds opponents’ cards over time, which lowers their power as each turn goes by and is able to Bond with other monsters for increased card effects. Disgraced Brawler is a powerful unit that can go Berserk if need be, and lastly, Samum has the Deathblow skill allowing the card to move adjacent units to the other row. The developers are anticipating many new cards to adopt this Deathblow ability.
Crimson Curse is coming to Gwent on March 28 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The developers will also be going through some of the new additions and keywords on their Twitch channel tomorrow at 8 P.M. CET.
