As of now, there are around 250 games within the Gundam franchise and another, Gundam Rogue Orbit, is on its way, with fans eagerly anticipating any news surrounding its release and when it will launch. Fortunately the pool of existing Gundam games is very big as it turns out, so players will have much to do in between now and then, but it should help that during Sony’s State of Play 2026, we finally received a release date for Rogue Orbit. Set to release on March 5th, 2027, the new Gundam entry will be set in the new “After Apocalypse” universe shared with the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO show premiering in 2027 and serving as a prequel to the events of Rogue Orbit. This new universe features an antagonist in the form of “the Apocalypse”, a self-replicating ecosystem created by the “Autonomous Interstellar Object” (that had previously gifted humanity with advanced technologies and knowledge) after it went rampant. In Rogue Orbit we will play as a pilot named RE-X piloting a mobile suit named “Gundam Helix”, and along the way meet several characters such as mysterious Sofia who appears to be watching RE-X, April, leader of the Stellarvane (a special duty-vessel that takes on the Apocalypse), Paul, leader of a band of sand pirates who target both the Apocalypse and wealthy transports, the latter of which they use to supply settlers, and Elaine, a knight commander and mobile suit pilot.
Alongside a release date, we got a further look at gameplay and customization, showing how players can select from numerous pieces of mobile suit gear including that of weapons, which we saw quite a good look at in the customization preview. Combat in Rogue Orbit is fast-paced and intense, and allows for tailoring one’s mobile suit to their preferred gameplay style through the likes of “tactical skills”, which are powerful attacks you can unleash at any moment and from which there will be multiple to choose from per weapon. Besides weapons, other parts of your mobile suit have different characteristics and behaviors that affect gameplay, such as thrusters and some being better suited for horizontal movement, and others three-dimensional movement. You’ll also be able to give your mobile suit a paint job, being able to select colors for each piece as well as the inner frame and glowing sections of your mobile suit.
