Unfortunately, Guillermo del Toro recently revealed that he doesn’t have any plans to get back into making video games. He also mentioned that he isn’t working on a new Silent Hill game despite many fans believing that his infamous comment during the Game Awards 2021 hinted at his possible collaboration with Konami.
During the Game Awards 2021, del Toro infamously said, “You know, one franchise I love the art direction in? Silent Hill. I hope we get a new one of those.” The last time del Toro worked with Konami was back in 2015. He and Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima collaborated on P.T., a playable teaser that became a popular staple in the horror game community. P.T. was planned to lead to a new addition in the Silent Hill series called Silent Hills until Konami ultimately scrapped it and removed P.T. from the PlayStation Store.
Recently, del Toro was a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he was asked about his infamous comment during the interview. Del Toro responded, “I kind of just wanted to tickle the ribs of Konami, because I don’t understand. [Silent Hills] was so perfect, what we were going to do was so enthralling.”
Del Toro’s complicated relationship with Konami, as a result of Silent Hills‘s cancellation, has been publicly known among the Silent Hill community. Therefore, his comment being nothing more than joke makes sense, given that he has made his feelings toward Konami publicly clear several times before.
During the interview, del Toro was also asked if he had any current plans regarding Silent Hill and responded, “No, not at all.” To the dismay of Silent Hill fans, this means that del Toro probably won’t be working with Konami or the Silent Hill series any time soon. Additionally, he stated that he doesn’t want to work on video games again, where he called himself “the albatross of video gaming.” The only other time del Toro previously worked on another video game was for the game Insane, which also got canceled.
