For those who have been waiting patiently for a potential Goldeneye 007 port, we have some exciting news. Xbox achievement website TrueAchievements has posted list of new achievements for the late 90’s classic, which also includes titles that are accompanied with black and white images of the game to boot. This was later tweeted out by well-known video game aficionado Wario64, who also mentioned in their thread that another source claims that this potential port is listed on the site for the Xbox One. This would in turn make it backwards compatible and playable on the Xbox Series X|S.
This leak of achievements is especially intriguing considering that the game has never been seen or featured on any of Microsoft’s home systems at all. in fact, Goldeneye 007 is perhaps the only game in their long catalog that has never received a proper port to modern systems. This has left it sort of trapped on the Nintendo 64 hardware, the original system that the title came out for way back in 1997. The closest we’ve ever gotten is a reimagining of the game for the Nintendo Wii in 2010, which featured current 007 actor Daniel Craig and not the 1990’s actor Pierce Brosnan.
One of the main reasons that Goldeneye 007 hasn’t been properly ported to today’s systems is due to licensing issues between three different parties, Nintendo, Rare, and MGM. The former being the original publisher and proprietor of the title, the middle being the main developer who no longer works with Nintendo, and the latter being the main owner of the 007 licenses and movie franchise. It’s possible that all three were able to work these issues out, as well as negotiate with Microsoft in order to get a modern port underway. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about this in the coming week, but either way this is exciting to hear and a great way to start off the new year in the video game community, Speaking of 007, IO Interactive is still working on their Project 007, in which we also hope to hear of more in the foreseeable future as well.
