In today’s world, video games are bigger than ever, as they have transcended the market to become major influences for people around the world. Writers, composers, designers, and even retail market chains have taken the plunge and utilized video games in some form or another to use. However, what a lot of people don’t realize is that video games were a big deal in the 1980’s, 1990’s, and the 2000’s as well. One company recognized this, and in 2008, decided to create a service that was dedicated to releasing those games with the guarantee of every single game being DRM-Free. Good Old Games, better known as GOG.com, continues to sell and release games on their website, and today they celebrate their 10th Anniversary.

The celebration announcement came with a special five minute video with clips from Youtube personalities and game developers detailing the influence of older video games and how GOG helped bring them back to prominence. Some of these people include Obsidian Entertainment CEO, Feargus Urquhart, Angry Joe, Mark Turpin, and Daedalic Entertainment’s Co-Founder, Carsten Fichtelmann. The website has also created a special page that shows a timeline of their ten year history and how they started out in post Cold War Poland, to becoming big enough to rival even Steam in terms of digital sales, even launching their own desktop app, GOG Galaxy. In addition to this awesome retrospective, the website is also holding a voting poll for the 10th Anniversary video game gift. Whichever video game wins the poll, will be given away for free on October 4. The poll is set between three excellent games, Shadow Warrior 2, Super Hot, and Firewatch.
It’s also important to note that GOG is operated by a subsidiary that is owned by CD Projekt, who is better known as the creators of one of the greatest video game series of all time, The Witcher. The developer of The Witcher and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 also sell their games DRM-Free, and always have games for sale on the website. GOG.com also recently announced a brand new video game, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, which is due to release next month.
GOG hasn’t swayed from their original plan ten years ago, to bring back fun and forgotten games, while introducing new ones that are influenced by them with a DRM-Free guarantee. The company promises to improve on the website and the GOG Galaxy app, while retaining the main reason why we all fell in love with them in the first place. Good Old Games. Here’s to ten more years GOG!
