Godzilla Hits PS3 Exclusively This Winter

Japanese PS3 owners are in for a treat late this year, when a brand-new Godzilla game will be smashing through their TVs exclusively on the last-gen console.

That’s right, everybody’s favorite giant lizard/dinosaur/mutant/thing has a new game coming out, and from screenshots the game looks decently impressive for how early it is in development.

The game was first previewed in the Japanese magazine Famitsu, but for those of us unfortunate enough not to be fluent in Japanese the news reached us thanks to CVG and YouTube.

As of now there are only a few really important things to keep in mind:

1. For its stage of completion, the game is looking good. Rather than being designed to emulate the new movie (or aim for any real semblance to realism at all) the game is instead inspired by the older Japanese films, cheesy effects and all. Godzilla looks like a rubber suit, and the city kind of looks like cardboard cut-outs, but that was always a major part of the charm of the films, and at less than half-way through completion Namco-Bandai has plenty of time to tighten up the visuals before release.

2. Yes, the game is set to be a PS3 exclusive. Not PS4, nor Vita, only PS3. While this decision is somewhat confusing given the fact we are already over half a year into the next console cycle, it is still nice to see fresh software gracing Sony’s older hardware.

3. As of this moment, Godzilla has been announced for a Japanese release some time this winter. No word has been mentioned concerning a potential western release for the game, though given the response the game’s announcement has received from games media already it can be hoped Namco Bandai will rectify this some time soon.

As far as gameplay is concerned, the new Godzilla game looks to emulate the classic Rampage formula of blindly smashing any building in your way. The game will be based around missions, and those missions will be based on different movie appearances from Godzilla’s past, with screen effects implemented to emulate the look of the classic films the game is referencing. There really is not a whole lot more you can ask from a Godzilla game than a chance to ravage Tokyo, and with the game’s dedication to mimicking the movies every gamer’s inner six year old will be delighted to finally emulate their favorite scenes.

Godzilla has long held a place in the hearts of a lot of gamers. From his many, many movies and cartoons and an impressive presence in games already, his influence can be seen in everything from Mario to Rampage. With a brand-new game hot on the heels of the movie series’ reboot, it looks like his influence is set to last a long time to come.
