Earlier today, a surprising new entry in the God of War franchise was announced. Sony Santa Monica announced that they have partnered with CMON Games for the release of God of War: The Card Game. This brand new card game will be the first time a game in the franchise won’t be a video game itself.
According to the official announcement, God of War: The Card Game will put up to four players in the role of the Norns, “mystical beings of great power,” who are tasked with stopping the end of the world event, Ragnarök, using a mix of “heroes, villains, battles, victories, or defeats.” The game is set set to feature heroes from the 2018 entry in the series such as Kratos, Atreus, Fredya, Mimir, Brok, and Sindri.
The game will pit players against enemies and bosses from the most recent title as they try to complete quests to stop Ragnarök. However, these enemies can be “combined and remixed in exciting new ways, creating unique “What if…?” scenarios every time they play.” Quests each have their own set of cards that are double sided and feature special rules depending on which side is face up. As the game goes on, quests completed will influence which quests will be available. There will be moments in the game where players can choose between quests, but the ones the players don’t choose will have “dire permanent consequences” later on in the game.
Heroes players choose will each have their own features. Players will be provided a dashboard for the hero they choose which shows “special abilities, health totals, and tracks the number of cards a player can keep in their hand from round to round.” The heroes each have their own unique starting decks for players to use, but players will be able to modify the decks as the game progresses.
God of War: The Card Game is set to release in Q3 of this year.
Sony Santa Monica has also been celebrating the game’s one year anniversary this week. You can check out the studio’s thank you video to fans below:
