Earlier this week, during Sony’s IR Day presentation, where they gave their expectations on their next generation hardware, a sales milestone for one of their biggest game was quietly slipped in. Sony Santa Monica’s massive hit God of War has officially surpassed ten million units sold since its release last April.
Honestly, this sales milestone is unsurprising as, upon release, God of War was met with massive critical and commercial success. The game went on to sell 3.1 million copies in its first three days making it the fastest selling PlayStation exclusive of all time. Unfortunately, it didn’t hold the title long as Marvel’s Spider-Man would take that crown upon its release last September.
God of War joins a few other PlayStation 4 exclusive titles that have passed the ten million units sold mark. Both major Naughty Dog titles released, Uncharted 4: A Theif’s End and The Last of Us Remastered, have passed that mark. Guerilla Games’ newest IP, Horizon: Zero Dawn, hit this milestone earlier this year after two years on sale. The aforementioned Marvel’s Spider-Man, from Insomniac Games, sold nine million copies from it’s release in September through the end of November, so it’s probably safe to assume that game has surpassed that mark as well.
God of War reinvigorated the franchise which has lead to new opportunities for the franchise. Earlier this year, CMON Games announced that they were developing a card game based on the game which is set to release this year. PlayStation and Sony Santa Monica have also recently released a behind the scenes documentary titled Raising Kratos which follows the development of the game. This was a first for PlayStation, and you can check out the documentary on their official YouTube channel. With Sony announcing PlayStation Productions earlier this week, fans could see Kratos and Atreus make their way to television or even the big screen in the future.
