Ghostface Has Arrived in Mortal Kombat 1, and He Brought Kobra and Kira With Him

Guest characters have become kind of synonymous with Mortal Kombat, not necessarily the first fighting game franchise to feature them but definitely the most notable and the most popular. After a first season full of superhero guests like Omni Man from Invincible, Peacemaker from Peacemaker, and Homelander from The Boys it looks like Netherrealm is returning to their Mortal Kombat X horror roots with the latest guest character Ghostface from the Scream franchise, whose gameplay trailer just dropped, and it looks like he’s brought some friends.

As expected of a dude with a knife, Ghostface’s moveset consists almost entirely of stabbing you, running at you, and running at you and stabbing you. However, an interesting note that Mortal Kombat commentators and aficionados (and Mortal Kombat historians, at this point) Ketchup and Mustard revealed on their Youtube channel is that some of Ghostface’s fancier moves, the flaming somersault and the Kano ball specifically, are borrowed from Kobra and Kira a pair of Black Dragon thugs from Mortal Kombat Deception.

The implication here, of course, since there are three Ghostfaces, is that two of these Ghostfaces are Mortal Kombat 1’s version of Kobra and Kira donning the costume of the iconic villain to wreak havoc on the Mortal Kombat cast. The way they Ghostface plays is also reminiscent of Noob/Smoke, also from Deception; a tag team character who was actually a combination of two previous characters Noob Saibot and Smoke

This is an interesting and honestly creative way to approach Ghostface as a character. Ghostface himself doesn’t do much in the way of fighting game moves in the movies, and Kobra and Kira weren’t exactly popular Mortal Kombat characters, but put together they display how good Netherrealm can get when it comes to salvaging ideas from a pile many people would consider discarded.
