Ghost of Tsushima Surpasses 13 Million Copies Sold

Sales for Ghost of Tsushima, the 2020 action-adventure game from Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sucker Punch Productions, have officially surpassed 13 million copies worldwide. This milestone was confirmed by creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell during a recent interview, where they also teased details about the upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei. The two directors revealed that Ghost of Yotei will serve as a spiritual successor to the original, building upon the same core elements that made Ghost of Tsushima such a beloved title.

According to Fox, the first step in creating a sequel was to define what makes a “Ghost game.” For the development team, it was about capturing the romance and beauty of feudal Japan, which has become the DNA of the series. The team embarked on multiple trips to northern Japan to find inspiration for the new setting, visiting over a dozen locations before deciding on Mount Yotei. The breathtaking landscape of this area provided the perfect backdrop for the latest game, ensuring it would evoke the same sense of awe as the original title.

Ghost of Tsushima has garnered critical acclaim and widespread popularity among fans and received praise from some of Japan’s most well-known game developers. Both Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Final Fantasy, and Yuji Horii, creator of Dragon Quest, recently expressed their admiration for the game during a radio show appearance, further solidifying its standout title in the industry.

In addition to the game’s success, a film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima is currently in the works. Director Chad Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick series, confirmed last year that the script was complete after two years of development and that his team was close to moving forward with the project.

Originally released on July 17, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Ghost of Tsushima received a Director’s Cut edition with expanded content, including the Iki Island expansion, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on August 20, 2021. This year, thanks to Nixxes Software, the Director’s Cut was made available for PC players on May 16, 2024.
