While the Halo franchise and its studio have been taking some serious hits in the past few weeks, things seem to be looking up for the Gears of War series. Giant Bomb reporter and Industry Insider Jeff Grubb 6 alleged that The Coalition has switched focus to Gears of War 6 during his Game Mess Mornings Twitch stream on Thursday. The strategy spinoff Gears Tactics was the last entry in the Gears franchise which was released in 2020.
The Coalition have been notoriously silent on their future projects. Previously in 2021, the studio hinted that they were working on a brand new IP alongside two other smaller projects as they began their transition to Unreal Engine 5. The Coalition had a hand in the development of Halo Infinite and The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo. Now, Grubb claimed that The Coalition’s unnamed projects in development were canceled to focus fully on Gears 6.
“…The studio is now going to move on fully to Gears 6,” said Grubb. “I say now, it has likely moved on to Gears 6 in full over the course of the last year, but definitely, that will be their next game.”
(Rumor) Jeff Grubb says The Coalition has canceled its smaller non-Gears project along with another project due to the laid-offs at Microsoft. The studio has fully moved on to Gears 6 over the last year or so.https://t.co/uXq7sxWY7r pic.twitter.com/bY4pE9e913

Grubb claimed that Coalition’s project cancellations were due to the recent Microsoft layoffs, despite the studio only being affected “a little bit.” Bethesda was also affected but 343 Industries seemed to be the one hit hard the most. Now, they are in a stage of rebuilding while they seemingly transition to Unreal Engine and once again try to bring Halo back to its former glory.
The Coalition has yet to comment on these latest rumors, and considering how tight-lipped the studio has been in previous years, it will be a while before the community gets any confirmation.
