In a recent interview published by PCGamesN, a sequel to Garry’s Mod is all but confirmed. PCGamesN interviewed FacePunch Studios founder Garry Newman about the making of the original Garry’s Mod when he dropped this tidbit when asked about upping the price of the game.
No […] I mean, we’re kind of working on a sequel, so it’d be stupid to the raise the price. It’s early days. We’re looking at having more VR stuff in it – that’s the big point of it. And it won’t be called Garry’s Mod 2.
Apart from letting it be known that a sequel was in the works, the other big news coming from the quote was VR incorporation into the sequel. Rumors circulated for a time that VR support would be implemented in the game but they were quickly dismissed by Newman. The dream for Garry’s Mod on the Oculus Rift is now a big reality.
In the interview Newman revealed he didn’t plan on the game being so successful. Garry’s Mod was a free to play game from 2004 to 2005 before making its debut on Steam on November 29, 2006 with a launch price of $9.99; a price that still remains to this day. As of September 2014 the game has sold over 6 million copies.
Garry’s Mod will be celebrating it’s ten year anniversary on Steam next year. Newman does not plan on “anything crazy” but with the game still going strong this many years into it’s lifetime and with a very active community constantly evolving how the game is played who knows what may happen. With the announcement of a sequel in the works a little more than a year away that may become a possibility itself.
