GameStop Signs Studios for New Publishing Wing, GameTrust

GameStop, with over 6,200 retail locations, is taking its mighty market might and putting that into its newest foray – GameTrust, an independent publishing label.

According to Mark Stanley, VP of internal development and diversification, the new company has plans to “fund, market, and publish 5 to 10 independent games over the next 12 months.” GameTrust is “not part of the creative game-making process.” Rather, a game published through GameTrust will have access to “exclusive real estate” within GameStop’s online and physical stores.

GameTrust’s first big partner was Insomniac Games – best known for Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive – Insomniac will be launching upcoming side-scrolling adventure game Song of the Deep through the new GameTrust sales model.

Insomniac is joined by Ready At Dawn, the studio behind The Order: 1886; Frozenbyte, the Finnish developer of the Trine series; and Tequila Works, the Spanish studio behind Deadlight and Rime.

Further announcements are expected for both new developers and new games – specifically, games with budgets between $0 and $15 million. Stanley referred to these as “‘AAA’ indie games,” or “dream projects that studios never had the support to do because they’re smaller games.” With the backing of a retail behemoth like GameStop, these kinds of indie games are sure to prosper.

This is also another sign that GameStop is taking steps to ensure longevity as the consumers shift away from physical copies to digital copies – hosting in-house digital indie copies is sure to be a boon for the company.
