Gameplay Teased From Oddworld: Soulstorm

It’s been quite a while since last we heard a substantial amount of news about anything new in the Oddworld universe. However, the developers at Oddworld Inhabitants have finally given fans of the running series a gameplay teaser to hold them over until the eventual release of Oddworld: Soulstorm. It’s been about 5 years since the release of Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! and after a few hiccups in production, the creators of the “quintology” are excited to share what’s coming next. We haven’t covered any news on Soulstorm’s progress since an article back in 2016, but now take a look at the gameplay teaser:

Oddworld: Soulstorm will center around Abe’s next terrible conflict, this time with an all new machination. The complete story “retake” was inspired by the original Oddworld narrative and this time around will feature immense visual and cinematic spectacles that will be something different for the franchise. The fresh mechanics and “twisted new devices enabling highly explosive deviousness” look like they will be delighting the community upon launch when this story of a volatile society pushed to its limits comes to players’ libraries.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, one of the creators of Oddworld, Lorne Lanning, expressed his excitement in rolling out this next installment and the inspiration for the idea of the game “I looked at a world where I thought people were getting disengaged from what they saw happening on a global landscape.” The meek slave and main character, Abe, was born from this thought process as someone who would unexpectedly have “an impact on the major economic forces of the world.” Lanning continues talking about the supposed righteous law, “political landscape, the fake news media – all of it would come raining down on him. And he would become labelled ‘the Bin Laden of Oddworld.’”

Fans are no doubt happy that Oddworld: Soulstorm has life once again and that gameplay progress is now being shown. While there is no set release date for the “2.5D” title, in the past the games have been launched on the Steam store and it’s unlikely that trend will change.
