Game of Thrones is one of the biggest IPs in pop culture. Once dominating the 2010s, it wasn’t slowed down by anything other than itself. And at the height of its career, many clambered for video games set in the universe. And due to the nature of the source material, it lent itself well to the genre; it’s just that the games we got weren’t what many asked for and left many unsatisfied. But that’s all changed with the next title in the series, revealed in 2025: Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, set for release in 2026. That’s unfortunately now changed: in a development update, the game has been pushed back to early 2027, and the reasoning is that the developers need more time to develop the game they set out to make and reach the high quality they want. Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is an RTS set in the world of Game of Thrones, revealed at the 2025 Summer Game Fest. It garnered a lot of interest due to its trailer depicting a showdown between Jon Snow and the Knight King that many wanted to see in the show. During the trailer, PlaySide Studios showcased the game as an RTS, which is a perfect genre for the series, as the IP is all about conquest for the Iron Throne. The game will feature many factions and heroes from the series, such as House Stark and House Lannister, and heroes like Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. There is a massive emphasis on combat and units as PlaySide aims for a battlefield that feels visceral and alive. The game will also see you battle all across Westeros in your conquest for the Iron Throne. Originally set for 2026, the game has now been pushed back to 2027, and the reasoning is that the developers need more time to develop the game they set out to make and reach the high quality they want.

As mentioned before, Game of Thrones is a popular IP that many want to relive and explore in various media. Especially in gaming, as the world lends itself well to the medium, and Game of Thrones: War for Westeros being an RTS is a no-brainer to many, as it’s perfect for that type of game. It may suck that the game is now set for 2027, but it’s for the best, as the developers are stating they need more time, so the longer they cook, the better the game is going to be.
