During a financial hearing today Funcom, the developer behind Conan Exiles, stated that last year was the best year for the company profit wise ever. To much delight, the notification of all the success business wise wasn’t the only news that the developer had in store. CEO of the company Rui Casias also made the announcement of a new line of games coming from the company.
“We are very excited to announce an exclusive gaming partnership with Legendary Entertainment to develop a line of video games based on the works of Frank Herbert’s Dune. Dune, is one of the world’s best-known science fiction universes and a personal favorite of mine. To work on Dune games is a dream come true for many of us in Funcom.”
A recent statement outlined that the company has agreed to a six year deal with Legendary Entertainment which will open up the door for at least 3 new titles. Another bright spot within the announcement is that the first of the games will be an open world game with multiplayer capabilities. The title is also set to go into development sometime this year. Casias also has some comments on being able to work with a well known franchise such as Dune.
“So many of us at Funcom, myself included, are huge fans of Frank Herbert’s work and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with Legendary to bring the iconic DUNE universe to life for gamers all over the globe.”
No details on platforms or release windows have been given at the time. There will also be a Dune film coming to theaters next year, so this leaves players to wonder if the games will follow closer to the new movie adaptation. Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see what direction the studio will take with the franchise. We will just have to wait and see whenever Funcom has something to show on their project.
