From Books Freely Given Away To Millions of Games Sold: Metro Exodus Has Sold 6 Million Copies

Metro Exodus, first released in 2019, has sold 6 million copies according to an article from Eurogamer. Embracer Group, the parent company of Koch Media, stated in their interim report 3 that Koch Media has, “seen strong sales across its gaming brands over the last quarter.” Koch Media is the publisher for 4A Games, the Ukrainian development studio behind the Metro franchise. The game’s Twitter account celebrated their baby’s third birthday and all of its accomplishments thus far.

It isn’t a wonder that the franchise, Metro Exodus specifically, has been so successful. If you have not played the game yourself to know and would like a hint, check out Mark Brown’s Game Maker’s Toolkit YouTube channel. Brown, who is currently nominee for Unity’s best insider devlog, makes videos that take “a deep dive into game design, level design, and game production”. In Brown’s video below he highlights some of the aspects that make Metro Exodus great. He details the immersive game design that undoubtedly led to the millions sold.

Players, who have not yet, can get their copy on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC. Players both old and new can look forward to the, “next entry in the Metro franchise” in the near future. This next part of the series, as well as the previous titles, were fathered by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Glukhovsky, “the author of the internationally best-selling series of Metro novels“, adapted his novels into the gaming franchise players know today. Before you had to pay for Metro 2033 on your gaming platform in 2010, the Metro 2033 novel was, “free on the net” in 2002. In an interview with Adria’s News back in 2015, Glukhovsky spoke on his books, games, and more. When asked about releasing his first and second book for free on the internet before print versions, the writer and journalist said,

the important thing is not to sell books, but to be read. I prefer to have ten readers than just one reader who buys my book…the first and foremost purpose was to share my ideas and thoughts and get feedback

As for video games, when discussing the past and current prejudices that the medium has garnered, Glukhovsky believes that it is steadily improving. A gamer himself, Glukhovsky expressed how games like Civilization and Wolfenstein would take up his time, instead of studying, during his early teens. In the midst of talking about growing up, his first Metro game, its “poor quality” stories, and the overall state of stories in video games Glukhovsky said,

when you are 20, you are not happy just by the killer instinct satisfaction. You want to have something more than just shooting and running. You wanna know why you should be this character, you want to know his dreams, his fears…You want to feel empathy and compassion to the characters

4A Games and Glukhovsky are sure to bring another great experience of play and story in Metro’s coming sequel.
