Jason is back and ready to deliver more carnage, blood, and more dead teenagers. Gun Media and game developer Illfonic announced today Friday the 13th: The Game. This third person multiplayer game, which will be released for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, will allow players to control Jason Voorhees as well as the camp counselors that Jason will take out one by one.
The game will be set in a semi-open world within Camp Crystal Lake, the setting of the legendary franchise.
Initial funding for the game by Gun Media is taking place on Kickstarter with the campaign going live with the goal being around the $700,000. The game does not have and is not seeking a traditional publisher due to how they want to present the game to players. The developers have stated that violence, gore, and nudity are essential to the game play and a publisher partnership might put a restraint on those “necessities” as stated by the developers.
Getting into the meat and potatoes of the game, Gun Media has made plans to release characters based on the very cheesy character tropes from the original franchise. The counselor characters will include a nerdy boy, machismo jock, girl next door, a flirty girl, and the survivor. Each character will have their own abilities based their classes like a nerd that can fix broken vehicles, the jock will have a stronger melee attack, and the girl next door would have a slight survival boost against Jason.
Jason himself will have some formidable abilities to deal with the young counselors. Jason will start the game with a weapon the traditional machete and will be physically imposing in comparison to the counselors, but he will also have the ability to instantaneously travel anywhere on the map, much like Nightcrawler. He will also have x-ray vision and the ability to sense blood, which will make counselors who band together an easier target.
Friday the 13th: The Game is scheduled for launch in October 2016. However, you can already guarantee yourself a copy of the game by pledging $25 to the game’s Kickstarter page.
