PlayStation has revealed a surprise crossover between indie darling Dave the Diver and iconic movie monster Godzilla, with new free expansion arriving to the game May 23. Announced via the PlayStation Blog, developer Mintrocket are bringing the King of the Monsters to the (usually) peaceful Blue Hole in celebration of the 70-year anniversary of the Godzilla franchise. The Dave the Diver — Godzilla Content Pack DLC will obviously feature the titular Kaiju, but some more familiar faces can be spotted in the expansion as well.
In the blog post, a few extra details about the plot of the upcoming crossover were outlined, including appearances from G-Force, the human-lead military department from the Godzilla series, and classic movie monster Ebirah, a titanic lobster monster who made his debut in 1966 in his own film: Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. The game is confirmed to have a new boss battle sequence in which Dave pilots a G-Force submarine to battle Ebirah, in addition to encounters with Godzilla himself. Animated GIFs of the upcoming DLC capture game footage of Dave’s battle with Ebirah, Dave’s first sighting of Godzilla, and even a classic-style kaiju battle between Godzilla and Ebirah above the waves. There is no word on whether everyone’s favorite deep-sea diver will see combat against the content pack’s titular monster, and it should be noted that the DLC will only be available for a limited time: from May 23 to November 23 of this year.
The new DLC comes hot on the heels of an impressive year for Dave the Diver and developer Mintrocket. This is their second DLC pack for the game, the first being a crossover with another hit 2024 oceanic indie game. The Dave the Diver — Dredge Content Pack arrived December 23, 2023 and was also released as a free expansion for the game. Last month, it headlined new titles added to the PlayStation Plus Games Catalog for PS Plus Extra and Premium tier subscribers, making it available to play at no extra cost. Dave the Diver has also been received intense critical acclaim, scoring an metascore of 90 on Metacritic. The game has been nominated for numerous awards since its release last June, and even won BAFTA award for Game Design. Dave the Diver is available now on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, with the new Godzilla DLC set to launch on May 23.
