Fortnite Developers Epic Games Receive Over A Billion Dollars In Investments

As one of the highest grossing releases of all time, Fortnite has been a golden goose for Epic Games. It’s understandable then that others want in on this pie, and it was recently announced that there have been over half a dozen new investors for Epic Games. With the combined investments of aXiomatic, ICONIQ Capital, KKR, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Smash Ventures, and Vulcan Capital, Epic Games has obtained $1.25 billion from these recent investors alone.

“We’re excited to partner with the finest minds in the financial, sports, and entertainment communities. This reinforces Epic’s position of leadership in real-time 3D technology, and accelerates our ability to improve the way people play, work, and interact with the world,” Tim Sweeney, CEO and founder of Epic Games, made this statement in the press release. Epic Games has received multiple large investments in recent history from companies such as Disney among others; while this was the largest funding round ever for a video game, Epic Games still has ownership of itself and is still led by Tim Sweeney.

Epic Games has given a lot of attention to Fortnite due to its widespread success and popularity, often hosting new events to continue player base growth. Their player base has actually grown a significant amount in the past couple of years, from having 30 million players in December 2017 to having 125 million players in June 2018. There have been a variety of factors that have led to this success, from the massive social media coverage of the game and crossovers with other popular pieces of media, to celebrity endorsements and more. While Epic Games has always had success in the industry with titles such as Gears of War and Unreal as well as their work on the Unreal Engine, they have achieved a level of success often unseen with the release of Fortnite.
