Today, August 17, 2021, Fortnite announced the introduction of a game mode that sounds all too familiar. Fortnite: Impostors is an incoming mode that bears resemblance to the popular indie game Among Us. This is not the first time Fortnite has drawn inspiration from the Innersloth game, as last December they featured a fan-made mode called “The Spy Within,” but given the official nature of the release, this game mode fits in easier with the rest of the game in terms of both plot and graphics.
The Venn diagram between Among Us and Fortnite: Impostors is far more circle than a mere overlap. In Impostors, 10 players board a ship and are divided into 8 Agents and 2 Impostors. The Agents have tasks to keep the ship running, but must always be on the lookout for the Impostors, who are trying to take over the ship by eliminating Agents. Public chat is unavailable for most of the game, except when meetings are called via report of remnants of an Agent or manually in The Bridge. The game ends when either the Agents finish their Assignments or vote out all Impostors, or when all Agents are eliminated.
To anyone who has played Among Us, the above description can conjure up some déjà vu. But Fortnite is not known for playing by the rules and has added a couple of twists to the game to keep it fresh and original. Most of these changes apply to the Impostors, who have gained the abilities to freeze Assignments, Teleport Players, and temporarily turn every player in the lobby into the game’s beloved banana, Peely. Impostors also have a set of Assignments that they can complete to gain the trust of the Agents. Overall, it looks as though Fortnite is attempting to broaden its horizons with Impostors, and hopefully, the charm of the game will shine through in this inspired game mode.
Fortnite: Impostors is free to play and out now.
