Formula 1 Launches Mobile Esports Championship

Formula 1 has launched a new esports championship for mobile eRacers. Their original esports series was created in 2017, focusing on traditional platforms like console and PC. The league is in its fourth season, and features tournaments for Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, PS4, PS4 Pro and Windows PC players. Formula 1 is now attempting to incorporate its mobile title F1 Mobile Racing, developed by Codemasters, into its esports initiatives. The F1 Mobile Racing Esports Series begins on September 7th and will establish a league for mobile eRacers.

Dr. Julian Tan, Head of Digital Business Initiatives and Esports at Formula 1, discussed the initiative with Esports Insider, saying “Mobile esports is a booming industry as Gen Zs and Gen Alpha spend more time gaming and on their phones. We see huge potential to develop our product set and expertise in this area in our ongoing effort to reach out and build our younger fanbase…” F1 Mobile Racing is free to download on the App Store and Google Play Store; the mobile championship is free for anyone to participate in as well. Qualification leagues will operate over throughout September, October, and November, with the top monthly performers qualifying for the finals in December.

This final consists of a nine-day tournament and the winner will be crowned the inaugural champion of the F1 Mobile Racing Esports Series. Tan goes on to say “This is part of F1’s strategy to continue making the sport more accessible to our fans through gaming and esports…”
