Well, it was going to happen eventually right? Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 is one of those franchises that just keeps building steam as time goes on. 40K is a tabletop game, but has been branching out more and more to other pieces of media. When the original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine released in 2011 it was well received but didn’t really venture too much farther than cult classic, to the point that the sequel Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 took 13 years to release and boy has the reception of 40k in the public eye changed since then. Space Marine 2 did so well that publisher Focus Entertainment is not giving us a decade+ to figure out if we’re getting another game or not, they straight up made a YouTube video confirming it (unlisted now).
Notice how I said YouTube video and not “trailer”, not even really a “teaser”. It’s just a still frame of Titus looking out into nothing but hey, that’s better than being kept in the dark for ten years. As stated, Warhammer 40,000 and even its big brother Warhammer Fantasy have become much, much bigger deals since the original Space Marine in 2011. Now multimedia franchises with designs that anyone who has glanced at the general gaming sphere can recognize, Warhammer is on route to become one of the big titans of the industry. Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer Fantasy series is probably the most popular Total War has ever been, Fatshark’s Darktide had a rough launch but is bounding back pretty well, Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus was popular enough to garner a highly anticipated sequel with Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2 (featuring playable Necrons), and Owlcat Games’ Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader made a splash in the RPG market and these are all examples off the top of my head.
Of course, Space Marine 2 is the crown jewel of 40k’s gaming legacy, reaching an insane 5 million players less than 3 months after its release, so this announcement is no doubt making sure to get as many eyes as possible on the development of Space Marine 3. It’s a good time to be a fan of big guys in big suits of armor with big pauldrons, Emperor be praised.
