At long last, well established indie studio Cyan Worlds, also known as Cyan Games, has announced that their upcoming IP, Firmament, will officially launch next month. The title is slated for a release on May 18, 2023, for PC through the Steam store, and later on the PlayStation console line as well as PlayStation VR. The game was originally announced back in 2018 as a kickstarter campaign which was backed by more than 18,000 people and brought in more than $1.4 million for the project. Since then, it’s been a slow and steady process for Cyan, which was only hurdled by the world wide effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Now, the studio is prepared to fully release the IP, and also unveiled a brief launch date trailer to celebrate.

Firmament’s visuals represent a steampunk aesthetic which can be played with both a standard screen or by using a VR headset. Players will venture into the three realms of Firmament, which will consist of several puzzle adventure facets as well as a deep story with immense world building. The player will also be escorted by a metal companion, which is essentially a metal Navi, and hopefully doesn’t make sounds every four seconds. As we already mentioned, the launch date trailer is very brief, coming in at under a minute. However, in that minute, we’re shown gameplay via first person perspective of the open world, as well as the player using his device to open doors to new area.
For those who don’t know, Cyan Worlds has been working in the video game industry since 1988, making them one of the most tenured indie studios for the better part of 35 years. The studio has built an impressive portfolio of titles under its banner, but without a doubt, the most well known and most widely praised IP that they released was Myst back in 1993. The game broke numerous grounds at the time, and is often considered one of the major pioneers of the first person/open world exploration genre. Cyan released a sequel, Riven in 1997 to similar praise, which added more puzzle mechanics and world building to the franchise.
Firmament will officially launch next month on May 18 for PC through Steam and VR. The title will also release later for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation VR.
