We live in a post-leak world ladies and gentleman. A world where Dugdrios have glorious golden hair and where the Pokémon Sun and Moon demo has been mined for all it’s worth. There aren’t that many secrets left, other than plot details everything is out there for your viewing pleasure.
Among the remaining questions is what are the names and types of the starter final evolutions and thanks to this latest trailer we can scratch that one off the list.
I say “the names and types” because the world at large has known what they look like for while now, even without the help of the Pokémon website. But we can’t stay away for long, so here we go.
Decidueye is the final evolution of everyone’s favorite owl Rowlet. What makes Decidueye special is that he’s the first starter to ever have a Grass/Ghost typing. It is an expert bowman, able to pull off masterful feats with its arrow quills and do so with almost super speed. Like all of the starters, Decidueye has a special move only it can learn. It’s called Spirit Shackle and it prevents enemy Pokémon from fleeing or switching out.
Litten’s final evolution, Incineroar, is also the first starter to have a Fire/Dark typing. This will no doubt please the fan base who have been begging not to have another Fire/Fighting typing. Despite having the “fighting spirit” Incineroar is still very much a half Dark-type. Many people don’t like this Pokémon because it can often get overzealous in battle and use attacks that can hurt the opposing trainer. Its special move is called Darkest Lariat and can damage opponents while ignoring their stat changes.
Popplio has gotten a lot of unjustified hate since it was revealed. So much so that its creators responded to it, and this final evo won’t change anything. Shame, it’s still my favorite. The biggest complaint about its evolutions is that they appear too feminine despite the creature being both male and female. As you can see from the picture, Primarina doesn’t change anything. As is the trend with the starters, Primarina is a Water/Fairy-type with the special move called Sparkling Aria which can heal the burns of any Pokémon it hits.
Moving on from the starters, like every Pokémon games, there are always a set of at least three secondary legendaries that are hiding all over the game world. The Legendary Birds in Red and Blue, The Legendary Dogs in Gold and Silver, The Regis in Ruby and Sapphire and so on. In Sun and Moon, there are four, one for each island in Alola. Tapu Koko was revealed a few months ago and now we have a look at the other three.
Tapu Lele is a Psychic/Fari-type and the guardian of the Akala island. Tapu Lele’s scales are said to sooth the physically tired as well as healing them. It’s not the strongest, but it can support other Pokémon when it can. It has the brand ability called Psychic Surge which boosts all psychic attacks and gives those moves priority.
The guardian of the Ula’ula island is the Grass/Fari-type Tapu Bulu. It can manipulate grass and other vegetation including the horns on its head to suit its needs in battle. Tapu Bulu has the ability Grass Surge which turns the battlefield into a grassy terrain boosting Grass-type moves and grants a little HP with each one. The ability also lowers the damage of moves like Earthquake, Magnitude, and Bulldoze.
Lastly, we have Tapu Fini Poni’s guardian. Tapu Fini is a Water/Fairy-type and it produces a special water that can purify the body and mind. However, before anyone can get any of the water they must prove their worth by making it through its mist. The mist also ties into its ability called Misty Surge. It halves the damage dealt to Pokémon on the ground by Dragon-type attacks. The mist also prevents ground Pokémon from being confused and other status conditions.
All of the Tapus have a special Z-Move called Guardian of Alola which summons a giant body that will smash the opposing Pokémon.
The Sun and Moon will be treating us with a new space Pokémon called Cosmog. It’s a Psychic-type that few people on Alola have ever heard of, so it makes sense that the mysterious Aether Foundation is involved. Cosmog is known by kings and other dignitaries as “The Child of The Stars”.
Moving on from the new, let’s take a look at the old.
Just like Meowth it’s evolution Persian will also have an Alolan form. Much like the Alolan Mewoth, it’s a big rich jerk. Persians were held as a symbol of wealth which has given them a bit of a big head, literally.
The end of the trailer teased a few interesting things. The first being that a Pokémon League hasn’t actually been built on Alola yet. The game will also have the Battle Tree where players who’ve beaten the game can challenge and fight with other characters from the franchise like Cynthia from Diamond and Pearl and Wally from Ruby and Sapphire. Finally, Sun and Moon will see the return of Red and Blue, the original player character and rival. Although you might better know Blue as “Butthead” or Gary or whatever other rude names you could come up with.
Pokémon Sun and Moon will be out on November 18th for all Nintendo handhelds.
