Final Fantasy XIV Mobile was a mobile adaptation of Square Enix’s popular MMORPG that operated exclusively in China for a little over a year. Rumors about a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV began circulating in 2024. Square Enix later confirmed the project, with a broader release planned following feedback from the game’s launch in mainland China in 2025. However, it appears that the app will not be getting a spot on the worldwide market, as the game’s official website has put out an official announcement about the game’s future. The announcement confirms that not only has the planned global release been cancelled, but the game itself will also shut down on September 30.
According to the announcement, the shutdown follows the termination of the licensing agreement between Tencent and Square Enix. FFXIV Mobile was greenlit because of a licensing agreement between Tencent and Square Enix, allowing Tencent to develop and operate the mobile adaptation. LightSpeed Studios, a division of Tencent Games, was tasked with developing and operating the game until recently, when the licensing agreement between Tencent and Square was terminated. The termination of the agreement effectively ended the project and any planned expansions, including the global release. The announcement follows months of speculation about the project’s future, including rumors that questioned the game’s long-term viability. However, the official statement cites only business considerations and the end of the licensing agreement.
Looking at the timeline of the game’s lifespan, it has not been active for long. FFXIV Mobile was officially announced in November 2024, and was fully released in China back in June 2025. Given that the servers are going to be shut down in September 2026, this means that the game will be retired after over a year of live service. The registration of new accounts and in-app purchases has been turned off as the first stage of this final closure. The developers also confirmed that the game’s forums and customer support will close on October 15.
Some players believe there were early signs of the shutdown before the official announcement. Official updates had become increasingly infrequent. The global version’s website had also gone offline prior to the announcement. While this live service closure will not affect other versions of Final Fantasy XIV, it marks the end of a standalone, free-to-play mobile adaptation with its own dedicated online ecosystem.
