Final Fantasy is one of the most recognizable video game franchises in gaming history. One of the most beloved games in the franchise is Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. For a long time now though, many fans have been waiting for the third installment in X’s storyline. After recent comments by Tetsuya Nomura, a third installment may no longer be a pipedream.
These comments came from an interview between Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura, and key members behind the game development team for Final Fantasy X which was translated by RPGSite. Speaking to Famitsu, Nomura stated that “If we are to make 10-3, we somehow have a synopsis written by [Final Fantasy 10 writer Kazushige Nojima]”, going as far as to say that, “It’s sleeping right now, but the plot itself does exist.”
“I had the opportunity to work with people who entered the game industry after playing FF7. But now that phase has moved and now I’m going with people who entered after playing FFX,” said Kazushige Nojima, the scenario writer of Final Fantasy X. While this is great news for fans of Final Fantasy X, damage control was done during the interview to ensure that expectations were to be calm and collected.
Final Fantasy X director Motomu Toriyama made sure to let everyone know that as of now, Final Fantasy VII Remake is the main focus in regards to Final Fantasy and that the chances of this happening while the episodic remake is still in production is slim to none. Toriyama said, “The probability is not zero, but we are not in a phase where we can talk about it, unless we have finished producing Final Fantasy VII Remake.”
Judging by how big the original Final Fantasy VII was, it is likely that the full remake will not be done for some time now. As the first installment was released last year, it’ll likely be a long time before we see a return to Spira. There will likely be at least two more games in the remake’s production, but nobody truly knows for sure. And judging on how long it took to release the first game, it’s safe to say that Final Fantasy X-3 unfortunately will not see the light of day for some time.
