Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Strife Heads To Super Smash Bros.

Final Fantasy fans worldwide dropped their jaws today when the new Super Smash Bros character was revealed at the Nintendo Direct presentation today. Cloud Strife, hero of Final Fantasy VII, was officially announced as the newest entrant in the trailer seen below.

The trailer shows off a ton of Final Fantasy VII themed additions. Cloud is shown equipped with his iconic Buster Sword and two attires; his standard Final Fantasy VII SOLDIER gear and his outfit from the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. His limit breaks also make an appearance as part of his move set in the game including Blade Beam, Cross-Slash, Finishing Touch, and his ultimate limit break Omnislash. A brand new stage based on FFVII’s Midgar is briefly shown. Summons from the game are also heavily featured including Ifrit, Ramuh, Leviathan, Odin, and Bahamut. The end of the trailer revealed new Chocobo costumes for the Mii Fighter.

Cloud’s reveal marks the second new character announced since a poll was opened earlier in the year asking players what new character they’d like to see in Super Smash Bros. Ryu of Street Fighter was announced back in April.

No release date for the new material was given, but Nintendo stated more news would be coming in December.

While players are excited about his appearance this also comes as a big slap in the face to Sony as Cloud has never appeared on a Nintendo system and was notably absent from Sony’s Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale.
