Not much has been said about the announced Final Fantasy VII Remake since it’s big reveal at Sony’s E3 press conference earlier this year. This past weekend at Playstation Experience 2015, the Final Fantasy VII Remake was a major highlight of the show’s keynote where they debuted the game’s second trailer.
The trailer gives us our first look at Cloud and Barret in action with a recreation of the game’s opening sequence complete with brand new voice acting (which stays true to the original dialogue). Brief gameplay of the revamped fighting system are shown off in what seems to be a big departure from the original active time battle system.
Director of the original Final Fantasy VII and producer of the remake, Yoshinori Kitase, spoke briefly on the changes in another video released this past weekend. “The hardware itself has evolved since the release of Final Fantasy VII, and the games are more real and real-time based,” Kitase says. “I can’t say the new game is completely action-based, but it has more of that element and real-time than the previous game.”
In another big reveal, a press release from yesterday confirmed the game would be released in episodic format. “FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will be told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience,” read the release.
As reported by Polygon, series producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Tetsuya Nomura sat down with Famitsu to speak further on the decision to split the across across multiple installments. “It’s going to be multi-part because when we considered fully remaking Final Fantasy VII in PS4 quality, and as we look over much of it, we estimated the volume to be beyond what could be fit in one entry,” Nomura explained.
In a separate interview with Dengeki Online as reported by Kotaku, Nomura added “Since we thought there would be stuff we would probably have to pare down and supplemental things we probably couldn’t add, we decided to divide it up, concluding that we have to do a remake that’s fully packed with content.”
A port of the original Final Fantasy VII arrived on Playstation Store for Playstation 4 shortly after the second trailer reveal. It is priced at $10.99 until December 13rd and players who purchase the game will also receive a static custom theme, featuring Midgar from the coming Final Fantasy VII Remake.
