It looks like we could be in for more Final Fantasy VII news very soon. During livestream the co-director of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Tetsuya Nomura, there will be some new information that will be shared in regards to the classical JRPG, more specifically with the 25th Anniversary of the title. It’s possible that this information is the long awaited sequel to the Remake, which will contain the second part of the original game that takes place after the events in Midgar. This is more than likely in line with Square Enix’s original plan, although it’s possible that this has been delayed a bit due to the world wide effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The livestream in which Nomura made these statements was for the mobile free-to-play battle royal title Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, which released in November 2021. Although at its core it is still an online multiplayer title, the game’s events take place roughly 30 years before Final Fantasy VII, well before the integration of the Soldier project, which are Shinra’s elite warriors for frontline combat. Very little is currently known about the sequel to the Remake other than that it will contain most of the overworld aspects and that will be fully directed by Naoki Hamaguchi, the other co-director of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Final Fantasy VII Remake was one of the most highly anticipated titles in recent memory. When it finally launched in April 2020, it was an immediate success and was critically acclaimed, brining in brand new generation of Final Fantasy VII fans in the process. It also went onto break franchise sales records and was one of the best-selling titles of 2020, something that Square Enix took note of right away. The company also recetly launched a special 35th Anniversary website which is currently teasing more titles for the foreseeable future, one of which is the much awaited Final Fantasy XVI.
