Horror games have a strange relationship with their sequels, with many of the greatest games in the genre either being standalone titles or spawning massive franchises around them. In the case of the Fatal Frame series, it has managed to keep up with console releases, expanding its gameplay and story every step of the way. Many attribute the franchise’s longevity to the unique camera mechanic that defines the series, combined with the rich narratives the games are responsible for. Now, players will have the chance to see both brought to the level of presentation they were imagined as with the upcoming release of FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, which recently received an overview trailer.
Like the original game, the remake will focus on the journey of twin sisters through a haunted village. To face the deadly spirits that plague the area, players will use the Camera Obscura which, according to the game’s Steam store page, has been upgraded to allow for Focusing, Zooming, and Filter Switching. The trailer expands on the camera’s functionality by showing off the Paraceptual Filter, which can trace the movements of the past to help with following and finding people. The Exposure and Radiant Filters also make an appearance, able to restore lost items and open sealed areas respectively.
The trailer starts with a look at the bond that the sisters share, a key aspect of the original game’s narrative that seems to be getting even greater attention in the remake. Now, players will have the ability to hold hands with Maya, granting health regeneration and making any situation without her even more dangerous. The graphical updates are also on full display, showing off the artistry possible for the series with access to the tools of the latest console generation.
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is set to release on March 12th for console and PC. In addition, a demo of the game will be available starting March 5th.
