Far Cry 4 Officially Announced

Ubisoft announced the latest game in the Far Cry series at its end-of-fiscal-year earnings report, which will release on November 18 in North America and November 20 in Europe for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PC.

The announcement doesn’t come as much of a shocker, considering the deluge of leaks and clues that have surfaced in the past few months, as well as Ubisoft confirming their intentions to make Far Cry 4 on the back of Far Cry 3‘s financial and critical success. That the game will be arriving oi just a matter of months from now, however, should come as a welcome surprise to fans of the franchise.

Ubisoft described the premise for Far Cry 4 as such:

In Far Cry 4, players find themselves in Kyrat, a breathtaking, perilous and wild region of the Himalayas struggling under the regime of a despotic self-appointed king. Using a vast array of weapons, vehicles, and animals, players will write their own story across an exotic open-world landscape.

Following the success of Far Cry 3, we wanted to take the franchise to the next level and create a game that will surprise players and exceed fans’ expectations.Given the unique setting, we feel Far Cry 4 will stand out as a top first-person shooter and we’re eager to reveal more about the game in the coming months.

Development will be handled primarily by Ubisoft Montreal, who have a solid track record of games such as Far Cry 3,  the Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed games, and the upcoming Watch Dogs. Other studios that will contribute work include Ubisoft Toronto, Kiev and Shanghai, as well as Ghost Recon developer Red Storm.

The game can already be preordered from retailers such as GameStop, Amazon, Walmart and the Uplay store. Preorders will come with bonus content, namely a set of extra story missions in which the player must rescue Hurk, a raving lunatic from Far Cry 3’s  DLC content who straps explosives onto monkeys. Another bonus is access to the Impaler Harpoon Gun, which Hurk is holding suggestively on the game’s official website.

Hurk’s presence in Far Cry 4 means that this new game and Far Cry 3 will take place in the same game universe, a first for the series, as previous games had no narrative relation to one another.

More information will be revealed by Ubisoft at E3 next month.
