Fans Recreate Grand Theft Auto 2 in Real Life

Fan videos of classic games are nothing new, but a dedicated group of Grand Theft Auto fans have done an extraordinary job doing a live-action video of the top-down classic thanks to a drone and some serious choreography.

Most gamers know the Grand Theft Auto as a behind-the-back third person shooter in which players are free to cause (or not cause) mayhem as they see fit. However, in its earliest incarnations, Grand Theft Auto was 2D and took place from a top-down perspective.

To that end, a group of fans from the Czech Republic have recreated the feel of 1999’s Grand Theft Auto 2 with remarkable accuracy, complete with a rigid top-down perspective (thanks to an expertly piloted drone), a UI and sound effects from the game, and actors dressed as prisoners and police officers murdering each other in the peaceful European suburb. It’s not quite Liberty City, but with such dedication and craft, who cares?

The video has amassed close to a quarter of a million views within the two days its been released, and viewers have responded extremely well to it. It’s a testament both to the popularity of the Grand Theft Auto series and its fans.
