Sombra has become one of the most elusive Overwatch characters to be added to the game. There has only been two, including Sombra, so the bar isn’t that high, but people didn’t jump through hoops to find Ana.
Kotaku reports that since June Blizzard has been teasing the character through dev commentary videos and an ARG (Alternate Reality Game). So far the ARG has lead players to a skull made of ASCII code. That still isn’t the end of it, the GameDetectives, the same people currently solving the Eye Sigil ARG, have taken the case.
Unfortunately, the case has caused some fans to try unconventional means to find the elusive hero. Means like hacking a player named Sombra’s Battle.net account in search of information. GameDetectives admin Epsilon said they got access to the account with social engineering, which means that they told Blizzard thy owned the account and changed the password from there.
These users eventually came to the conclusion that they would need to use social engineering to break their way into the account using Blizzard’s support desk.
Nothing was taken, but Epsilon and the other admins don’t condone hacking.
Users sometimes get excited and try to take actions into their own hands.
While breaking into another player’s account is wrong, it is very in theme with Sombra as a character who suffered a little hack herself. Polygon reported a few days ago that a leaked image popped up on the Overwatch subreddit revealing the mysterious character.
The image was allegedly taken from an internal Blizzard website. As you can see, the headline says she would be “hacking” her way into the build later that night. So it’s possible that she is already in the game, at least internally.
If you look closely you get a glimpse of her backstory. Here’s what it says if you can’t see it.
Sombra is one of the world’s best and most notorious hackers. As a child, she lost everything during the Omnic Cris[is]…with computers to survive. She worked for the Los Muertos gang in Mexico, executing increasingly more…until she attracted too much unwanted attention and had to go underground…
It could be fake, but the same leak also revealed the Halloween skins and loot boxes which turned out to be true.
