In February 2021, solo game developer USERLANDS shared the first publicly available information regarding their upcoming obscure 3D action platformer, Eternity Egg. With USERLANDS’ first post during this time expressing an ambition for the game to release in late 2021, Eternity Egg has undoubtedly come a great distance from these early hopes. Over the years of active development, a host of mind-bending half marketing, half dev-log content, including early gameplay videos and screenshots, would be shared on the USERLANDS official Twitter account, allowing potential fans to begin wrapping their minds around exactly what Eternity Egg had cooking under the hood. Due to the game’s lack of visibility to the online public early on, it made perfect sense to hold off on releasing the final game until it sparkled with polish in all areas, given its truly obscure look and feel. Today, we see USERLANDS’ extended caution in fully releasing Eternity Egg outright, as this past September 22, they announced Eternity Egg’s paid Steam early access, planned for release on December 10. With the early access being priced at just $10 cheaper than the final release—yet to receive an official release date—the nearly 30,000 fans who have been following the project up until this point are sure to be ecstatic to finally get their hands on the story, gameplay, and world that USERLANDS’ colorful mind has to offer.
I plan to continue work over the next year towards a end of 2021 release… 🦋🕸️👁️🎲

Thanks to the sheer amount of content shared publicly since 2021 in regards to Eternity Egg’s early development, potential fans have had the pleasure of knowing exactly how USERLANDS intends for their game to be played and perceived. This is entirely thanks to early gameplay footage displaying work-in-progress movement systems, including the use of a pogo stick-like staff, which the main character can be seen using as both a weapon and a form of mobility, bouncing around the colorfully twisted world of Eternity Egg. This already intriguing movement option, paired with later displays of the player character’s ability to wall run, wall-flip, dash, ground-pound, and slide, spoke volumes to gamers everywhere about what kind of game Eternity Egg was looking to be. A fast-paced action movement platformer.
Eternity Egg’s intriguing premise, gameplay-wise, combined with its jarringly colorful, low-poly art style—reminiscent of low-tech 3D rendering software, described by its creator as “grotesque”—and its trance soundtrack teased throughout early gameplay footage, affords the project a truly unique identity that few indie games so far have come close to matching.

Though little is known about the story of Eternity Egg, the game’s Steam page gives a small amount of insight into the topic. Players will take the role of the Entropic Staff’s otherwise unnamed wielder, as they embark on a journey through a twisted land whose thermodynamic equilibrium has been set off balance. Gathering and harnessing displaced energy by vanquishing the foul entropy parasites that are infecting this thermodynamic equilibrium is the only way to uncover the secrets of this warped reality. Though the game has not yet been released, there is a possibility that exploration and story completion will be non-linear and left up to the player to explore and discover on their own. It is detailed on the game’s Steam page that NPC interaction will be an integral part of progression, as players will have the ability to exchange gifts, trinkets, and curios with these strange NPCs in a “wild west gift economy”.
With all of that being said, and excitement for Eternity Egg’s paid early access shooting through the roof these past few weeks on social media, is it too late to mention that the game also features a fully upgradable garbage waste disposal unit available for the player’s free exploration needs? Though dry in its seemingly intended humor, the prospect of flying around in this already teased mode of transport will give players an unprecedented birds eye view of the beautifully retro inspired 3D environments that USERLANDS has poured their heart into over the multiple years of development.
Eternity Egg releases on PC via Steam in a paid early access state on December 10.
