Epic Games Announces Battle Breakers, a new Cross-Platform Tactical RPG

Epic Games has announced their new project Battle Breakers, a role-playing game built in Unreal Engine 4 that will be playable on PC as well as on mobile in Android and iOS devices.

The game was officially unveiled today at the currently-ongoing Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, although the game has already been in testing via a limited soft launch in the Philippines.

According to the developers, Battle Breakers combines tactical turn-based RPG’s with “zany 80’s Saturday morning cartoons”, which is evident from the game’s visual style and music choice.

In Battle Breakers, players can assemble their own dream team of heroes from a wide variety of ninjas, mages, robots, dinosaurs, and more to take on the hordes of monsters that have infested every corner of their kingdom.  Wielding elemental powers like tsunamis and firestorms, the player does battle in a variety of settings such as lava fields and ancient forests.

In practice, the game plays something like a Pokémon game, according to Polygon, who describe the game as “visually captivating” but not yet addictive.  Players break crystals on their touch screen to reveal either treasure or enemies, who they then take on in a rock-paper-scissors style battle, with certain elements having the advantage or disadvantage against others.

Battle Breakers does not yet have a set release date, Epic Games only saying that the game will come out later this year.  In the meantime, though, players are encouraged to pre-register for the game at the Google Play shop to receive a bonus “Dark Beastman” hero at launch.
